I think the problem is that the public agrees with fiscal prudence IN PRINCIPLE... but when it comes down to the actual brass tacks, down to actually cutting programs, stopping borrowing... the 'public' is mostly only in favor of cutting the pork spending that goes to benefit SOME OTHER GUYS --- never to cut what goes to benefit themselves directly. And that is what gives the politicians all the opening that they need to slither into office by lying to us all --- promising all sorts of "easy choices" that they will never actually deliver on.... And the public is either gullible enough to buy all of this, (or else willingly allows themselves to be duped...) And so we get an endless string of pols promising us 'no pain'.
