Economists call it discretionary spending; others call it fun. Regardless, recreational spending is crucial for growth, and some signs point to a rebound. The swimming-pool industry got good news when Florida said the number of pool permits rose in January. It's just the second month of growth since at least early 2007, according to Wedbush analyst Joan Storms.

Meanwhile, enough high-end customers have returned to Rick's Cabaret strip clubs (RICK) that it stopped offering $1 beer specials at its Miami club, Tootsie's. Now, the price is $2.75, according to Brean Murray Carret analyst Eric Beder.
