I recently read a very good book on the Donner party- and I think they were much maligned. It sure sounded like they waited until their trail companions were dead before they ate them- which is, I think you will agree, the decent thing to do. And FWIW- I had not realized just how many people actually survived. It's a fascinating story, really. en.wikipedia.org Even some of the children survived- which is pretty amazing, really.
