I don't think it is conscious for the most part but Occam's Razor says that's what is behind it. I saw an interview with a woman who was practically in tears over Obama's plan to address the nation's schoolchildren ... she claimed it was because she didn't want her daughter to be exposed to socialism ... I doubt she could have defined "socialism" if you gave her the rest of her life to research it ... she didn't want her child to be addressed by a black person in a position of authority. Not that it matters much, we all have our likes and dislikes, though in the case of the tea people some of them take "dislike" to extreme levels.
