SplitRock, The Prodigy Internet Access Provider, Selects Bay
Networks' Remote Access Concentrator for Major Network Upgrade

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1997--

Initial Deployment to Total over 57,000 Ports

Bay Networks,(R) Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced that
SplitRock Services, Inc., the provider of Internet access to Prodigy
customers, has selected Bay Networks' System 5000(R)-based 5399
carrier-class remote access concentrator for its Internet connection
requirements, including 56 Kbps transmission. SplitRock selected
Bay Networks' end-to-end concentrator solution based on its
industry-leading performance and high port density, and the clear
migration path to future IP technologies. In the initial implementation
plan, over the next six months, SplitRock plans to install more than
1,200 5399 modules, which totals over 57,000 modem ports. The
5000 MSX chassis deployed as part of this rollout will be able to
grow seamlessly to support over 150,000 modem ports as
SplitRock's network grows.

With support for both K56Flex(TM) and x2(TM) in the same 5000
MSX chassis, the 5399 remote access concentrator offers large
telcos and ISPs unmatched flexibility, while also providing
high-density access capabilities at a low cost per-port. Based on
DSP modem technology, the model 5399 is software upgradeable to
the eventual V.PCM standard, ensuring that users can capitalize on
their technology investment.
