I was not trying to come off as a jingoistic "America Firster." But, I don't want us to begin to come in last for want of facing reality and better learning how to compete. The idea that the typical person in China is a peasant wading in a muddy rice field behind a water buffalo ceased to be accurate decades ago. Their students are ahead of ours in math and science, they produce more engineers, etc., etc. They are leading in green technology. They have very favorable energy contracts with Iran and will do very little to stop its drive for nuclear power. They increasingly will have gas and oil pipelines from the 'stan republics into their heartland. They will control more and more of the world's oil and gas supply. Thousand and thousands of good jobs in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin have gone to China. Where does it end? Americans need to wake up and face reality.
