You can argue they jack up rates to cover bad debts. Its theoretical in this case as his bills were paid.

Has it occurred to you that it's not theoretical in most cases? And that unpaid costs are in fact passed on to everyone else? Or that your "cousin" (euphemistically speaking) might have had a better chance if he had had insurance and caught his illness earlier?

Your cousin's case might just be a pretty good example of what's wrong with the American health care system.
