the student loan dead beat guy i know can't bank. he has to pay $30-40 in order to cash his check. he's locked out of the system - other than the check fee, that's probably a good thing.

he asked me when the debt gets paid off since it was government backed.

i told him it probably has already been paid in full by the government and the government probably sold off the debt to a third party for some small fraction of the debt.

I don't know if any of you are getting these new statements for your cresit cards but here's a new trick to get you to pay faster. My Chase account comes in and it states that if I pay the minimum payment that it will take me 36 years to pay off the balance but if I pay the minimum + 81% more of the minimum I will pay off the balance in 3 years. This seemed a little out of whack so I did the math. The calculation for the minimum + the extra 81% of the minimum was correct, paid off in about 3 years. If I only pay the minimum my math says that I pay it off in 7 years not 36. So I checked another card, Wells Fargo. Same thing pay the minimum +40% of the minimum they say 3 years to pay off, correct. If I pay the minimum they say 25 years. My math says 8. These banks are just pathological liars.
