TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 OCT 24 (NB). Toshiba Corporation [TOKYO:6502] has confirmed a report in a Japanese newspaper that it has signed a cooperation agreement with a major Chinese consumer electronics firm. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun said in its Friday morning edition, Toshiba will provide a number of technologies, including DVD , to Sichuan Changhong Electronics Group Corp.

A Toshiba spokesman told Newsbytes, "We recently signed a basic agreement to expand cooperation between Toshiba and Sichuan Changhong. We have had a business relationship for a long time, supplying them with things like color CRTs and semiconductors."

He continued, "The objective is to expand our business relationship into areas like procurement and manufacturing." The two companies have yet to decide exactly what shape the cooperation will take, said the spokesman, but it could include technology for DVD , as reported in the newspaper, and other consumer electronics items. Toshiba is also looking at using the vast sales network of Sichuan Changhong to distribute and sell Toshiba products.

According to the newspaper, Sichuan-province based Sichuan Changhong had a 27-percent share of the Chinese television market in 1996 and sold 4.8 million sets.
