"What could possibly be the reason for an American woman giving birth to a child in a foreign country making a phoney announcement thousands of miles away and perpetuating that lie where her son has to maintain that fiction with his friends in school and for the rest of his life etc. "

Doesn't lead to

"believing this is more than insidious and more than just odd behavior."

In fact that's the reason why its odd behavior (or more accurately, odd belief). You might be surprised by the number of people who believe all sorts of odd things. And also the number of people who make such claims for whatever reason without really believing them very strongly or at all.

Also I suspect a significant fraction (probably a majority if you count people who think there is a chance, but not necessarily a very large one) don't really believe Obama was not born in the US. The group that thinks Obama is covering up something else about his birth, and looks at this as a way to pry it out, and the group that is just grabbing on any anti-Obama thing and jumping on it, might each be as large or larger than the "true believers".

And while its a large number of people in every day terms (put them all together in one place and its more like a big army than a social gathering), its a small percentage of the population, and its apparently not growing. The true believers might always believe, but the opportunists don't seem to be talking about it as much, and I don't see brand new true believers coming along.
