Visit the rest of the world and see what an ass you feel like when all you speak is English....and the Europeans speak 2 or 3 languages.... Do you understand the meaning of the word necessary? Visiting the rest of the world isn't necessary for most people. Also many visitors just stay in the tourist traps, where knowing English will get you by. Would their experience be enriched by knowing the local language? Usually it would be, often greatly enriched. But having a richer, more interesting vacation experience is not "necessary". And I do agree with you, "necessary" is false for Americans if only 70% can finish high school.. If 100 percent graduated from college, knowing another language would not be necessary.
