"BN 11/4 Compaq Grabs Computer Market Share From Toshiba, Paper Says
Tokyo, Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Corp., based in
Houston, Texas, knocked Japan's Toshiba Corp. from the top
position in the U.S. notebook personal computer market in
September, the Daily Yomiuri reported, citing Computer
Intelligence, a private research agency. Compaq's retail sales
share rose to 28.8 percent during the month from 17.3 percent
a year earlier, while Toshiba's fell to 25.3 percent from 41.5
percent. Compaq attributed the gains to strengthened marketing
efforts, focusing on its Pressario line of computers, the
paper reported.
Last week, Toshiba cut its target for personal computer
shipments for the year through March 31 by 15 percent.
