[Bear chat] <<<I'll have to tell you about a trip to Canada I took when I was 11. Remind me sometime. If you say Irene and the Bears. I'll remember.>>> If you have a Canada-Bear story, then you have to go see "The Edge," starring Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin (and what's her name, Ellie Mac Somebody:)) It's not really a bear story. It's about the difference between information and knowledge and between personality and character. Man against nature, yes, but, more importantly, man against man and man against self. I plan to see it a second time, if for no other reason than to fly over the Canadian ice fields again. After seeing it, I phoned my oldest daughter and told her the film would bring back memories of our flight over Canada's Mt. Waddington on the way to Lake Chilcot ten years ago, and she absolutely drew a blank. We rode in a plane exactly like the one in the film, taxied up the Straights of Georgia, flew over the glacier-ridden mountains, and landed on the most gorgeous lake in the world --- 50 miles of azure beauty untouched by civilization --- and she can't remember it! I'm afraid to ask if she remembers staying up half the night to watch the moon rise over the distant peaks. . . . or the night the crew built a sauna. . . or shooting the rapids on the Fraser. . . Perhaps I should have given pop-quizzes along the way. Nah, we keep what's important and no one can decide what for us. In the words of Robert Frost: I could give all to Time except --- except What I myself have held. But why declare The things forbidden that while the Customs slept I have crossed to Safety with? For I am There And what I would not part with I have kept. So, let's have the bear story. If you've kept it since the age of eleven, it's got to be good. Bed time stories for adults. Night! Pat
