An excellent thought-provoking book I recommend is called "Who Wrote the Bible?".

It tracks the best current thinking from notable biblical scholars, document experts, textural analysts and linguists and tries to track down the major independent sources for each line in the Bible.

A massive, on-going work of scholarship, but a lively read still.

(Many scholars have been puzzled by the various differing versions of significant stories/events which have all been included in the Bible... in some cases differing versions have actually been inter-cut/interspersed among one another, while other times they appear removed from each other.)

A recommended read.
