That is true. It's too bad we don't legislate by pulling commissions of experts together to come up with solutions and then voting those solutions in. I agree that politics really gets in the way of good solutions.

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. Legislation by committees of experts has been tried - in the USSR, among other places. You are describing what would be inevitably tyranny by committee.

To an extent, this is what we have now - committees of politicians voting in laws written by staffers, lobbyists and other "experts". But now, at least they are somewhat accountable, as they are about to re-discover come fall.

Committees of experts share the information problem that politicians face. They might avoid the partisan political divide (or they might not) but they would still be subject to lobbying and other political influences, without even having the check on them of the vote.

I'd prefer letting people decide what they want to buy and sell themselves, with politicians or committees deciding things.
