Seemed like Kullicke & Soffa did a funny number today. They beat estimates, but didn't say orders were strong as I thought might be possible. In fact, they said the coming quarter would be slow, but the year would be good. Hmmm....

Anyway, here's a recent ESI press release.

ESI Introduces the First Laser Trimming System Built Exclusively For Chip Resistors and Resistor Arrays

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESIO - news) today introduced the Model 2300 -- the first laser trimming system built exclusively to meet the increasing demands of chip resistor and chip array trimming.

The worldwide chip resistor market is growing at a double-digit rate. Industry sources estimate 1997 worldwide output in the hundreds of billions of units. The trend toward miniaturization in the communications and information equipment market is helping fuel this growth. ESI's Model 2300, specifically designed to process these smaller components at higher throughputs and with lower costs, will enable manufacturers of chip resistors and chip arrays to meet this demand. The Model 2300 boasts a more than 20% throughput improvement over currently available systems.

Non-stop productivity is achieved through ''load-while-trimming'' handler operation and magazine replenishment. The Model 2300 can also recover from broken and double substrates. Built-in pattern recognition, utilizing ESI's exclusive machine vision technology, enhances the speed and reliability of runs. New software and an easy-to-understand graphical user interface also give the Model 2300 a strong combination of benefits for fast, reliable chip resistor and chip array trimming.

Among the standout features of the Model 2300 is the diode-pumped laser, which provides more than 6000 hours of maintenance-free operation. This compares with an average 400-600 hours of lamp life for previous generation flash-pumped lasers. ESI's innovative new dual-mode measurement system, developed specifically for trimming chip resistors, provides high speed and accuracy over the complete range of resistances found in chip resistors and arrays.

Another unique benefit of the Model 2300 is a lower total electrical power requirement than current systems, an advantage in many countries where power consumption is a concern.

The Model 2300 is being introduced at Productronica, November 11-14 in Munich, booth # 11.A14. Systems will be available for delivery beginning in early 1998.

ESI's Circuit Fine Tuning Business Unit has more than 25 years of experience in providing laser trimming solutions for thick-film, thin-film and surface mount devices. These circuits are the basis for a wide variety of products in the telecommunications, automotive and instrumentation markets. ESI is the leader in laser trimming applications and installations, with more than 2,500 systems installed worldwide.
