We recently bought a waterproof case for our Canon Powershot G9 (Canon item number WP-DC21). This is from page 4 of the manual: "Do not use the Waterproof Case in place of a personal flotation device (life jacket)." == “When operating the mode dial and the zoom button with your eye to the viewfinder, care should be taken not to put your finger in your eye accidentally.” (I reckon it's OK to stick yer finger in yer eye on purpose, tho)
