Meanwhile back in the war zone...The email below was forwarded to me through an SF channel.

FYI TRADOC is the acronym for Training and Doctrine Command. It is a key 4 star command. This US Army function - plans, directs, controls, funds, and integrates all army training throughout all branches of the service.

For this individual to say the US Army is admitting failure is huge.

The CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Force) was a huge success in the 60s. It enabled many hundreds of Montagnard villages to defend themselves and the entire program was run by our Special Forces. DOD screwed up and is still screwing up by attempting to win this war with conventional US Army and USMC forces. (Gee, I think I've said that before.)

In Vietnam, it was VC and NVA killing villagers instead of Americans. Guess who the population cooperated with?

I do not believe we have the patience, blood and $ left to spend another 6-10 years to attempt to duplicate a similar CIDG effort in Afghanistan.

Watch for the composition of the survey team. That will define the seriousness of the effort. It will also be an early marker for success or failure.

I got a call from an officer about to go over with a survey team to
Afghanistan to figure out how to develop a traning program for the
Afghans. The Army has admitted that it has failed when it came to the
training of the Afghan Army.

My initial response was the lesson of the OSS in WWII was to create a
manpower pool of trainers with language skills and cultural orientation
- Special Forces. The examples that validate this were the training of
the Montagnards under the CIDG project and the training of the El Sals.
I was involved in the latter, but am looking for information on the
CIDG.

For anyone involved in training the Montagnards.
What did you teach?
How did you organize the units?
What were some of the lessons in training Motnagnards?

Thanks,
