Regarding the meter, I don't know if it could have been the furnace fan, but I'd guess it's possible. Depends on how much electricity you use on other things. Probably you'd have to wait and see. If you changed the fan back to automatic, you might look at the meter after couple of days and calculate if the usage is back to normal. You should compare it to last March usage to get a seasonally adjusted comparison.
