The process of change is going to be both inevitable and organic.

This change in health care is going to be very good for the economy as well.

People in Australia are much more entrepreneurial than Americans, in no small part because they don't have to worry about losing their family's health insurance if they leave their major employer. Lack of employment mobility exacts a huge toll in economic inefficiency.

Only about 20% of Australians choose to purchase a private medical insurance policy, for about $1k annually, to supplement their Medicare coverage. Doctors seeing patients in a private practice receive a payment both from Medicare and the supplemental payment from the private insurance firm or the patient.

The remaining 80% of the population are either satisfied with Medicare, or not so dissatisfied that they're willing to cough-up an extra $1,000 each year for private coverage.
