Many people have written over the past few days asking me to comment on the very last sentence in Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech on the Federal Reserve's Exit Strategy before the Committee on Financial Services, U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.

"The Federal Reserve believes it is possible that, ultimately, its operating framework will allow the elimination of minimum reserve requirements, which impose costs and distortions on the banking system." ....

Mercantilism as an economic policy proved successful for the British for generations. They wouldn't let countries like the US manufacture most goods. Instead, the US would send lumber and cotton to England and receive (much smaller quantities of) clothing and furniture in return.

Now it's the Chinese doing the same thing to us. At least the Chinese don't capture our sailors and impress them to work on their ships...
