We will always have recessions and, I fear, we will always have bubbles.

The question that you are asking seems to assume that positive "lasting change" is defined as larger government.
IMO, the biggest "lasting change" in my life has been the end of the cold war.

I don't want to be in the position of defending the Republicans because I disagree with many of the things they have done in the past. What I would like to see them do and what they actually do are often different. I tend to have libertarian ideas and am disgusted by things like the idea that paying taxes can not be done without buying Turbo Tax software because the tax system is such a complex mess.
