One thing I think that IDT/Centaur did right was naming the C6 the WinChip. What most people can relate to is compatibility and the most common standard they want to be compatible with is Microsoft Windows. Positioning themselves as THE processor that's made specifically for Windows rather than a "cheaper Pentium" should help idetntify the part to consumers and relate it to the industry giant, Microsoft. IDT is hardly known outside of the electronics industry.

Intel has announced that they are working with Lotus/IBM to allow the upcoming Lotus Java Suite of software to be certified to run on Intel processors WITHOUT THE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM. This is a potential killer for Microsoft's dominance of the OS and office suite markets. Microsoft should find this a little more than irritating and should be motivated to work even more agressively with IDT and Intel's other competitors. As you know, Microsoft's upcoming WIN 98 is going to support added MX instructions incorporated in the C6+ and parts from AMD and Cyrix. This ability for Intel's competitors to enhance their processors within the framework of a supporting OS is critical to their being able to meet or beat Intel's bloated efforts.
