With people like Lieberman, Lincoln, & Bayh claiming to be Dems, we don't need Scoop. We need McGovern types.

I think what JohnM and Dale are saying is true BUT it is true in both directions. Gone are the Scoop Jackson types - the guys that were conservative Democrats that offset the McGovern types.

The second part of that is much harder to establish. If you compare the Dem Party of today with the Dem Party at that point, and you focus on the Scoop Jackson element as defining it as moderate, then your comparison would be putative neoconservative foreign policy types in the present Dem Party. Joe Lieberman, who is still a Dem for purposes of organizing the senate and chairs the Homeland Security Committee (much clout) is the heir of that tradition. Moreover, the increasing clout of the DLC within the party from the late 80s forward is clearly a Scoop Jackson element.

To state this a different way, it's quite clear that the southern Dems segment moved to the Rep Party and contributed mightily to its increasingly conservative domestic policy stances. As I recall, Jackson was fairly liberal on domestic policy matters, much the way Lieberman is (at least on cultural issues).

Right now the Dems are a centrist party. HCR is a centrist package. And the Reps are so right wing that it concerns their conservative members.

All things change, however.
