I've seen liberals say driving on roads is welfare or socialism too. So they claim you're hypocritical if you object to whatever the latest scheme is.

The interest deduction didn't just occur during the recent bank scandal...it's been part of the IRS code for years and was put there to promote housing sales which are such a large part of our economy. My point had nothing to do with the current crisis. Why should we get a deduction for mortgage interest? The fact that we do means it is a benefit which can be called homeowners welfare... You've heard of corporate welfare, I assume??? The term welfare is a favorite among conservatives..

"Kind of stupid for the government to create a "progressive" tax curve just to make up for the tax breaks that most Americans take, such as mortgage interest."

They just don't "take them"...it is tax break that has been granted to mortgagees.... The more of my own money thing is laughable.....you can call all of your taxes your own money but you would be wrong if you owe the money to someone else, ie the IRS. You are free to not use the deduction.
