what was going on in the Soviet Union in its last years, and how internal problems led to its collapse.

Perhaps the USSR would have eventually collapsed no matter what the US did. Could be true and the impact of the US actions was to accelerate the process.

I guess same could be said about civil rights - blacks were on the move in the 50s - civil rights was becoming inevitable and perhaps what LBJ and the bi-partisan congressional vote in 1964 did was just accelerate the process.
