To certain mindsets it was. And those who feel that way are not necessarily racists. They see everything as a zero-sum game. So, if someone else gains, they have to lose.

What bothers me the most is the lies. The right revolves around lies. Granted, politics is the art of slanting things. But, the right has gone way beyond slanting to outright fabrication. To the point that they have a totally different set of 'facts'.
