That's the nature of good and evil Snow. To be good and rise above the barbarians, ElM must hobnob with the Devil and be surrounded by the Devil's acolytes. Only then can true good shine through.

Any fool can be good when surrounded only by good. Indeed they will find it so easy that they'll easily fall under the sway of evil. ElM's problem is to be good while neck deep in evil. Then he can come to the serious challenge of being good while surrounded by good. It's only when he has entrenched good in his soul that he will casually wander among both good and evil, untainted.

Life is such a paradox. The law of unintended consequences awaits the unwary at every step.

One must be able to be surrounded by those grasping for gold, while remaining pure of heart.
