COMEX and NYMEX precious metals futures ended mixed on moderate
volumes Tuesday, with activity dampened by Gold Week industry
functions in New York, traders said.

"There's been some fund shortcovering in gold this week and
producer activity seems to have waned a little, allowing gold to
consolidate after recent weakness, but silver, basis December,
seems to have run into some resistance around $4.89 and is
struggling to recover from last week's sell off," Refco analyst
Tim Porter said.

Central banks are expected to sell a net 544 tons of their gold
reserves this year, compared with disposals of about 311 tons in
1996, New York-based industry consultants, CPM Group, said in
their 1997 gold market survey published Tuesday.

"This would be the highest level of net sales since 1993, when
central banks reduced their gold holdings by 22 million ounces
(684 tons)," CPM Group managing director, Jeffrey Christian said.

But bullion bankers believe the total of net central bank gold
sales this year may well be closer to 800 tons.
