Don't you think you're extrapolating and generalizing an awful lot from one event? That's not a very big sample size. :)I'm sure it's true that youth of color need better information about and access to birth control and STD prevention. Gosh, I think all the information on this is out there, readily available, and well understood by teens of every color and subset of the population. If they don't get it from their parents or a school sex education class, they get it from magazines, other media, and each other. Maybe some of the other parents on the thread see it differently. I would be curious what they think. My guess is that culture is a big factor. Studies have indicated that young black men in particular don't want to wear condoms. Promiscuity seems to be more frequent among youth of color which implies, perhaps, it's more acceptable in their culture. At any rate, I see multiple factors at play, with lack of information being the least forceful of those factors.I believe it's also true, as I pointed out, that religious people have opposed teenagers having that information and access to birth control. There has always been consternation with regard to sex education being done in the schools. A lot of people, not just the uber-religious, prefer they be the ones who teach it, and some have their children exempted from a sex education class. But I don't know how prevalent this is anymore. One of the teachers on the thread might know if very many parents are having their kids exempted. If your assumption, though, is that religious people want to keep their kids in the dark about sex education, I can't agree with that. In fact, not at all. It's a hyper-sexed world we live in...this is the reality. Keeping our kids ignorant would be irresponsible, even dangerous, and I believe that would be the attitude of all religious folk of at least average intelligence.
