Farrakhan: Anti-Obama comments may lead to death Story Discussion By SOPHIA TAREEN | Posted: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 pantagraph.com Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said Wednesday that a hateful climate is being created in the U.S. that may encourage an assassination of President Barack Obama. He pointed to racist comments, including the "N-word," being shouted at legislators who supported Obama's health care overhaul legislation and past rallies where signs depicted Obama as Hitler. "Obama is being demonized," Farrakhan said on WVON, a black-oriented Chicago radio station. "The incendiary remarks are fanning those who voted against" health care reforms. Farrakhan did not discuss any specific alleged assassination plots. His comments come as the FBI investigates reports of threats and vandalism against several Democratic congressmen following passage this week of the health care reform bill. Farrakhan, the 76-year-old leader of the Chicago-based movement that embraces black nationalism, predicted things will only worsen for Obama. "We're only seeing the beginning of it," he said. Farrakhan said the passage of health care reform is a step in the right direction, but it has also further divided political parties and sparked discourse that he called "a manifestation of hatred." Farrakhan has said the "white right" is conspiring to make Obama a one-term president. He echoed that view Wednesday and added that Obama has not been allowed to fully lead because of special interest groups, specifically naming the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Farrakhan has faced scrutiny for comments that many have considered anti-Semitic. He has repeatedly denied the accusations and said those comments have been taken out of context. He told WVON that his criticism isn't aimed at all Jews. "I've never hated the Jewish people. We are trying to correct an element within the Jewish community," he said. "When you offer a word of critique, (you) are called an anti-Semite. I'm not what you've painted me to be." Farrakhan said Americans needs to support Obama because he is the country's "last chance" to improve. Posted in Illinois on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 8:04 pm Updated: 8:06 pm. | Tags:
