If I wanted NG diversification, I would buy a NG firm.
I was just responding to your reasoning for being interested in CNX for the coal and met coal.
I don't know the answer to your question regarding PCX owning mineral rights to potential shale NG reserves. I looked through their 10K and saw no mention of NG reserves.

Although they have huge reserves of coal and met coal, I believe PCX to be mismanaged, and frankly have done so much better with my namesake, WLT. However, right now, WLT is much more richly valued (and deservedly so) than PCX.
