The device I saw yesterday gives position, orientation, mapping, messaging ... voice over Skype should be doable.... hmmm, maybe I'll get it out again.

Sounds like your average Smartphone.

Satellite phones are a thing of the past Maurice. Too many great Smartphones being produced by the thousands each day. Most being issued a subsidy by the local Terrestrial Service Provider. In the MSS business. We don't want to do "subsidies" or high cost product development that has a very short shelf life.

Much easier and cost effective to simply provide a $10 chip to Sierra Wirelesss to include a Satellite Interface into a tiny WiFi Modem/Hotspot. Then any smartphone can become a Satellite enabled phone.

No more hundred million dollar contracts to develop stand alone satellite phones. The recent proposals provided by the National Broadband Plan have effectively killed the need for a Satellite Component for ATC. So that means that they can continue to purchase these COTS WiMax modems with every worrying about upgrading them to a "dual mode device" in a couple of years.

For many people.. a small modem that will enable satellite SMS is all they really need.

The Simplex version is already on it way to the shelves. The two-way version will happen in the next year.

Pricing will be the pivotal point.

Will it be Microsoft style... or Google???
