O/T Yes, exactly.

Have a few pigs, some chickens, a couple cows. The neat thing is, they reproduce. That takes care of protein for the family.

Have a vegetable garden and jar stuff up for the winter. Food's taken care of, assuming the weather is ok.

Raise a bunch of kids and that takes care of labor, once they can tote things around and chop wood.

Try to raise a cash crop of some kind, but that's the tricky part. If the weather sucks, or if you get some kind of insect problem, or if seed prices are too high, or if prices at harvest time are too low, you can get burned. And if you don't actually own the place, but had to take out a mortgage to buy it, the bank might repossess. Which happened to my grandfather in the 30s.

After my mom's dad died in the mid-30's, her mother made ends meet by midwifing and getting paid in chickens and such. That, plus vegetables from the back yard. My mother got her first job at 15 in a canning factory for a dime an hour and she thought she was rich.
