Sun apologizes for cheating

By Deborah Gage and Smart Reseller

Sun Microsystems Inc. today apologized for optimizing its "just in time" compiler to get a better score on a Java benchmark.

Pendragon Software Corp. last week accused Sun of cheating on its CaffeineMark by duplicating benchmark code in Sun's JIT, obtaining scores on Solaris 2.6 that were 300 times faster than Windows NT. Sun pulled the JIT from its Web site but last week denied duplicating the code.

However, SunSoft president Janpieter Scheerder today acknowledged Sun had "violated the intent of the benchmark and we're sorry. No one intended to do anything malicious. We optimized too much."

SunSoft vice president Larry Weber said he has worked with both Pendragon and SunSoft to resolve the issue.

"We built upon what we determined was an error in the benchmark. There was dead code and you're permitted to remove it. However, we did it in a very non-general fashion."
