When I read the AT&T promotional guff and watched the video a day or two ago, I was thinking the same sort of things as that commentator. But I can understand they don't necessarily make a strong signal everywhere - good coverage costs money and there has to be a return.

It takes some deciphering to figure out what they really mean. When I got to the bit where they take the subscriber's minutes when the subscriber uses their own broadband, it did seem a bit on the nose.

People might as well just have their own wifi system and use their multimode devices in wifi mode when at home and switch to AT&T when out. I prefer Skype to phoning people these days. Increasingly, people will operate in Skype mode on their wifi devices so even if somebody is out of range of the AT&T wide area network when in their house, they'll still show up on the Skype contacts list.

Even if a person is showing as on-line, it's almost normal to ask if it's okay to chat [by voice] by a text message first.

With the right price and with wifi connection, Globalstar could get a lot of business in a short time. Terrestrial roaming prices are still absurd.
