Universal healthcare is one of the pre-conditions for calling a country an 'advanced industrial economy'. The US still won't have universal health care, but at least the knuckles are coming off the ground. I think the bill that was passed was typical of the convoluted legislation that comes out of the US political process -- but the fact is more often than not the US cannot even get its act together on any national or international issue. This is primary cause of our sharp drop economically and in terms of our ability to prosper in a global economy. What you may or may not get is that we blow an obscene amount of money and get huge gaps in coverage, a nightmare of insecurity for those whose health fails tham or who lose their jobs, and mediocre outcomes across the board. In short, what we have now is a wasteful tragedy -- to ask for a little forward progress does not make one anything less than intelligent -- and to oppose forward progress is not exactly something of which one should be proud.
