Premiums HAVE skyrocketed under the 'free market' plan. Any business owner or independent worker knows that. This plan should curb the trajectory of that rocket, though more is needed to really bring it under control.

When I went independent in 2000, COBRA coverage for my family of six (full medical and dental) was $600/month. Eighteen months later, it was $1800/month. We dropped it for a high deductible, catastrophic-only plan that covers nothing until a $10k family/$5K per person deductible. That plan started at less than $200/month, and is now over $600/month - for NOTHING, really it only covers a health crisis.

Every business and non-covered worker has experienced these skyrocketing rates. People who were covered by their company were somewhat insulated, but many saw higher co-pays and less coverage. It is ALREADY out of control.

It is overdue time to get this problem in hand. Obama and the Democrats were the only ones brave enough to actually do something about it. The Republicans would rather talk a lot and do nothing (oh, they did do the drug coverage plan a while back, but most Republicans would now claim that was also 'socialism')
