You are confusing the organisations with its members.

No I am not. My rant is against the union.

We should ban public unions because there is no one arguing for the public. Unions are in bed with politicians and administrators.

Public unions are nothing but legalized mobs.

I can understand the need for unions when workers are put in a position of danger or exploitation by their corporate employers. We've seen throughout our history just how far corporations will go to drive down labor costs and maximize their profits, a perfectly rational practice, regardless of how morally devoid it might be.

I also understand the importance of their opting to change employers when they are dissatisfied. Which means that all retirement benefits must be made portable.

I prefer a balance between union membership, as well as employee shareholdership. When workers are owners, not just employees, I think their mental frame of mind is different. They're more productive because they recognize that it will enhance the value of their ownership in the company and their rights are protected.

Public unions are a bit different. They can create a tyrannical civil service that is service only in name. As Mish as forcefully noted, they can adopt a sense of entitlement and privilege that exceeds the status of the taxpayers who employ them.
