The State is going to get squeezed out of the picture -- that is what I am talking about. The State now treats Hawaiians as wards of the State. With any form of sovereignty that will almost certainly come to an end.

Where the State now controls Hawaiian lands for the benefit of the State first and Hawaiians as an afterthought, the Hawaiian people (and who knows how they will be organized and represented) will be in a position to cut the State out of the deal. As a Sovereign Nation they will only deal with Washington as their primary point of contact -- this in Hawaii could be bigger than a 9.0 earthquake in LA. Maybe the State will cut a backroom deal in Washington to make sure that sovereignty comes in a form that denies any real sovereignty -- but watch out if it amounts to something more than window dressing.
