Environment Florida Statement on President Obama's Offshore Drilling Announcement

environmentflorida.org

In response to President Obama’s remarks on expanding offshore drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, Environment Florida Advocate Adam Rivera said:

“Oil drilling in Florida waters is the fool’s gold of American energy policy. It represents wasted effort, and an unnecessary degree of risk, for no real reward.

“Today, as President Obama touts this false solution in the name of addressing energy needs, Environment Florida is deeply disappointed.

“No matter how closely oil companies encroach upon Florida waters, we will depend no less on foreign nations for energy, spend no less at the pump, and fear no less for our security.

“Instead, by expanding drilling in two-thirds of the Eastern Gulf, we risk catastrophic damage to our world-famous beaches and ocean ecosystem.

“Sen. Bill Nelson’s apparent acceptance of expanded drilling is particularly regrettable.

“Sen. Nelson, of all elected leaders, should know that chronic pollution and oil spills obey no boundaries. There can be no politically determined border that safeguards Florida’s $65 billion-a-year coastal economy – or the sensitive military operations that rightfully concern Senator Nelson – from the dirty and dangerous impacts of drilling.

“Florida’s Congressional delegation must stand strong at this critical hour. Environment Florida applauds the strong responses of Reps. Kendrick Meek and Kathy Castor and urges our entire delegation to oppose any Congressional action to expand drilling in Florida waters.
