* Daiwa Securities America Inc started coverage of TELEFONOS DE
MEXICO S.A. DE C.V. with an outperform rating. "Our year end 1998
(12-month) price taregt of $61.00 poer ADRs represents a total
return of 29%, including dividends," Daiwa VP Brad Radulovacki
said in a report. "We believe Telmex will have weathered the worst
impact of the long distance competition during 1997 and we expect
the company's performance to improve going forward. "Furthermore,
we do not expect the introduction of broad-based competition to
the local telephony market to pose a substantial challenge to the
company," he added. (Reuters 01:28 PM ET 12/12/97)
