There was a period for a few years back in the 1980s when the Japanese yen was incredibly strong, Japanese real estate sold for astronomical prices, and they paid incredible prices for Alaska fish.

But then Japan went into its long slide and steadily chopped the price it was willing to pay. Alaska fishermen foolishly wasted years and dollars suing them over price fixing, but they inevitably lost. Commodity resource industries are a real bitch when you're on the wrong side of the price cycle.
