Derek - Re: "Paul, does intel have three shifts in its fabs?"

Generally, No.

Intel runs FOUR shifts - Each shift works a little over 12 hours per shift for 3 days per week alternating to 4 days per week in every second week.

In any one day, TWO shifts work in the fab, about 12 hours/shift. After 3 (4) days, these two shifts have 4 (3) days off and the 3'rd and 4'th shifts run the fabs for the rest of the week in a similar 12 hour/shift operation.

In this fashion, the fabs are kept running continuously except for a few hours on the weekend which can be devoted to special maintenance procedures.

Also, there is only ONE shift changeover per day, instead of 2, again maximizing equipment utilization.
