Shortly after beginning my tour in Okinawa I became friends a local who ran a diving tour business. We worked out an arrangement where I'd help him with his Japanese tourists in exchange for a free trip to off shore dive spots.... One of the dive sites was about 30 minutes by plane from Okinawa, on the island of Minami Daitojima. The island itself had no beaches or moorings, just cliffs, so the fishermen used cranes to secure their boats... We chartered a boat and told the Captain that we were hoping to fish some lobster. Now, keep in mind that up to that point I'd only been diving at some of the more popular places on Okinawa and most of those were fished out... so I wasn't getting my hopes up about the lobster... The Captain took us to a spot about 500 yards off the coast, dropped anchor and told us there was a cave about 50' down were we'd find lobster. I was the first one that reached the cave, the opening of which was just barely big enough for me to get through with tanks on.... I squeezed in with my flashlight and was completely blown away. The cave itself wasn't all that big but it was completely lined with spiny lobster and they were all adults! As soon as my heart palpitations stopped, I started stuffing my grab bag. To say the least we were eating lobster for the next 3 days. I was actually sick of lobster, (momentarily..<g>) at the end.
