>>Democratic Congressman claims he is worried that Guam is so small that it may "tip over and capsize" if too many people are put on it.<<

The Congressman's staff has released a statement saying that he meant that metaphorically, and that his actual concern is that the island's resources will be insufficient to sustain a large influx of military personnel.

I'm not buying it. Watching that video, and seeing the Representative struggle and fail to come up with the word "narrowest," finally going with "least widest," I'm inclined to believe he's really not that bright. Plain dumb, in fact. He even uses a hand gesture to depict the capsizing of the island, which would appear to indicate he's not speaking metaphorically.

I may be judging him too harshly. Perhaps he is able to intelligently discuss other matters, despite his apparent lack of knowledge about how islands work. It's embarrassing to me, as a Democrat, to have a man like that serving as a Democrat in the House. But at least nobody has nominated him to be President or Vice President. So I can take at least a modicum of comfort from recalling some of the equally stupid things I've heard George W. Bush and Sara Palin say.
