I'm certainly not arguing against the idea, I went to private schools myself, but as long as government provide public schools "for free" (meaning of course they pay for it with your tax money), than most people will be served by them (unless they decline to a much greater extent).

If you have vouchers you can expand competition in schools much further (in fact you could replace the whole public system with private but voucher paid schools if you don't short change the vouchers and if you wait long enough, some existing public schools would likely remain but if they where 100% dependent on vouchers they wouldn't be public schools in the same sense that they are now.
