Our Bishop in Houston/Galveston (I think the island lost a bishop during Hurricane Ike, or in a chess game <G>) supports the Pope, fully. He seems to think it's normal that a priest isn't tried and defrocked until 12 years after his crimes were reported. I have no idea how they choose bishops in America. I do know The Holy Roman Empire and The Popes fought a lot of wars over who did the appointing. Surprisingly enough, the emperors thought it should be emperors and the popes thought it should be popes. Everyone wanted the fees from the Bishopric, of course, but some, like Frederick II, also considered Pope appointed bishops to be a fifth column in his empire.
Which they were.
