karen taught me several life-long truths, that

- cast iron cookware beats every other type of pots

- fiat x1/9 and similar convertibles are more fun than station wagons

- farmhouse living beats dorm and fraternity existing

- spring hiking in the gorges with wine jug and cheese in back pack is better than attending lectures

- do not go skinny dipping at the reservoir when visibly excited

- going around barefoot on northeastern campus in spring beats going to the beach

- do not say "no" when enticement knocks, for the regret would last a life time

... and given karen is still on my social network, when i remember and use none of my other university learnings, i agree with you

my university gpa curve was a downward sloping saw tooth curve, lower highs for winter semesters and lower lows for spring semesters

but all in all, university was, imo, very worthwhile, and should erita and jack have as much fun, i would be satisfied, but jack will have to depend on self for a living, whereas i am thinking erita would be more blessed, or at least backstopped. the psychology is complicated or not, depending on whether the observer has daughters or not

as to alcohol, i remember i used to study by a disciplined morning / afternoon / evening time schedule calibrated to examination dates, sunday afternoon to thursday afternoon.

thursday night was for goofing off with fraternal brothers, friday morning was for goofing off on own, afternoon was for anticipation and then engagement with happy hour, evening and saturday was for dating, sunday am was for recovery, before hitting the library stacks sunday afternoon / evening with companion.

i was a good student, took exams, did not learn much, practiced skills, and got ticket punched. so, as you mentioned, all's well that ends well :0)
