[The NEC-AMTX-HongKong connection] Hi Frank, NEC-AMTX & HongKong Telecom IMS have been linked for some time. I don't have the sources archived. I'm sure Pat can help. I can furnish the follwing info. <<To implement ATM over ADSL, NEC is introducing a range of chipsets, and has started a design activity for 'VDSL' aimed at delivering 52Mbits/s (25Mbits/s each way).>> June 11, 1997 NEC Broadband Access Systems Deliver Multimedia Services Though there are many types of multimedia services available today, just imagine what the future will be like when the next generation, high speed communication circuits are brought right into our homes! The world's first commercial interactive multimedia services project is about to be launched on July 1 by Hong Kong Telecom IMS. Based on NEC technology, the project is a harbinger of the future. Hong Kong Telecom IMS is now providing Internet service and is planning to add sophisticated interactive TV services to Hong Kong households such as video on demand, home shopping, home banking, movies, video games and high-speed Internet connection. ***A VOD System similar to the one being offered by Hong Kong Telecom IMS is currently being exhibited and demonstrated at the NEC booth during Asia TELECOM97.*** According to Mr. Hidehiko Yamamoto, senior manager of the System Engineering, C&C Network Products Development Laboratories, NEC Corporation, "NEC has a distinct advantage as a system integrator. Since it is impossible to foresee the future needs of end users, NEC offers consumers the flexibility to select from different types of communication circuits and a wide offering of service menus. The basis of this technology is the ADSL, VDSL and optical fiber transmission technology. Moreover, no other company is able to provide the total support from delivery up to the operation of a system." NEC in fact is offering a comprehensive system called the NEC Broadband Access System (NEBAX) , which is fully ATM-based and compliant with industry standards. NEC's Broadband Access System (NEBAX) is designed to offer an integrated, future-oriented solution for the fast-evolving era of multimedia communications. NEC's solution consists of three core elements: Fiber To The Curb(FTTC)/Fiber To The Building(FTTB)/Fiber To The Cabinet(FTTCab) system, a Set Top Box(STB) and Access Management Systems. "At the booth, the VDSL based VOD system is being demonstrated including the server, STB and service system. The demonstrations present a miniature version of the NEBAX system soon to be deployed in Hong Kong," adds Mr. Hidehiko Yamamoto. For the operator of a Broadband Access Systems network, it is particularly important to maintain circuit quality, to optimize circuit management, to increase the number of circuits as new subscribers are added, and to select the best transmission method. Among the NEBAX series, the NEBAX 100 NMS system is GUI (visual) based, and therefore, the procedures for planning circuit enforcement and modifications has been simplified. NEC doesn't just deliver components. NEC delivers total solutions based on our commercial and operation know how. That's what keeps NEC at the forefront of network building. Just imagine.
